Reunion Dinner

Sunday, January 25, 2009

It was a rather enjoyable day today, and as you can guess from the title of this post, today I had the annual reunion dinner. We went for CHICKEN RICE! Now you may be wondering, today is reunion dinner. Who in the right minds would go for chicken rice? Well, it was with anxiety that I stepped into the restaurant, although my impressions would soon change, as you will find out later :)

A picture of the restaurant. It is the Five Star Hainanese Chicken Rice Restaurant but I got the idea of a “low class” restaurant.

However, when I went in, I was actually very surprised at the number of people seated comfortably, and I was soon to discover for myself the reason. When I was at the table, I was instantly surprised at the large variety of dishes that they served, and some of them looked just as scrumptious, or even more appealing…there were also air conditioners too:)

A blur picture of the menu there dishes such as hot plate tofu, kang kong, BBQ sting ray and etc.

A blur picture of the menuFor example, the You Tiao (fried bread stick) was very crispy. There was also the aromatic Chicken rice and other mouth-watering dishes. And what's more, it is like ice-kacang melting in my mouth

As you know, it's quite embarrassed to be standing in the middle of a crowd and trying to snap a few photographs with everyone eating. So I apologize if any of the photos are not up to scratch.

So anyway, I found myself having a whole different idea of the restaurant. I felt that chicken rice was actually quite delicious. As you probably can tell from this paragraph, I'm quite an avid fan of meat, but in the comfortable settings and wide variety of food, I felt equally at home as I would have felt at any other restaurant.

Of course, all this talk might make me sound greedy, after all, the real point of the reunion dinner is to catch up with family. As there a Chinese phrase go “家和万事新” is a homophone for phrases which could mean “family should live in peace and harmony”

Back to buffet, it was actually quite crowded, so I regularly had people bumping into me as they tried to snap some photos so I respectfully gave way, although sometimes my courtesy was returned with people stepping on my foot as they walked past. After all, I didn't want the mood to get spoilt. The meal was actually quite filling, as you know the food was very heavy...I need to lose some fats:( After an hour of eating we were quite ready to go.

And so the reunion dinner was actually quite an exposure. It was also a great time to meet up with family. Maybe I wasn't able to highlight the family spirit so much, I mean it's something you can only really experience for yourself, don't you agree? Of course, I've tried my best, so let's just all soak in the experience of the new year and get into the festive mood.

Chinese "Niu" Year Celebration

Friday, January 23, 2009

It was a rather enjoyable day today, and as you can guess from the title of this post, today we had the annual Chinese new celebrations today...rejoice :)

Although today is suppose to be a day of celebration, it is also a very tiring day for me as I am one of the performers for the Chinese New Year celebrations-Chinese Orchestra!

You all had to select your CCA last year, so what did you choose? Uniform Group? Performing Art? Sports? Or Clubs and Society? Whatever CCA it is, I am sure you have truly enjoyed your past one year with your CCA members and forged new friendships with others. Well, I’ve joined table Chinese Orchestra, together with my classmates: Clifford, Charley, Darren Gan and Kai Hui. I am so glad I have made the right choice. Although I must admit I am not a good player, my tempo is extremely atrocious but at least I have found joy and laughter there, making close friendships with the other friends and seniors. My friendships with others have developed to a deeper level and we have learned to understand each other better, undoubtly because of the time we spent with each other and the memories we shared that cannot be achieved between classmates.

So anyway, back to the topic. We were released at 9.00am (after D and T) and had our recess. Then, I went up to the CO room to practice my ‘zhong sheng’ before the performance.

This is a picture of kai hui (in the centre of the picture) playing his 'Zhong Hu'. He is one of the best player in his section, "Sian Yue" There are different sections in CO. They are mainly "Guan yue", "Sian Yue", Tanpo Yue", percussion, Cello and base. I am in "Guan Yue" and I play "Zhong Sheng" It is very very heavy...sigh:( Kai Hui please do not come after me...

At 10.10am, we carry our instruments to the hall. Now you may be wondering who in the right frame of mind would go down so early went the performance start at 10.45am? If you guess that we went down so early for fun, you are wrong! The reason is we were the first one to perform so we must be prepared and you must also know that if we went in later, we might collide with students that were moving in to the hall.

So yeah! As you know we were the first one to perform. Now you may be wondering what song did we performed or want to listen to the songs that we played again. Here’s your chance. The two songs that we performed were “喜洋洋”and “贺新年” respectively.

These two short clips were taken by my good friend, Marcus Tong

喜洋洋

贺新年

Isn't the video cool right? The guy playing with the golden pipes is me! And the golden pipe thing is actually "Zhong Sheng"

After we performed, we went back to CO room to put our things down and headed towards the back stage of hall as we are going to sing chinese new year songs! It was quite challenging as we play songs and not sing songs.

While we were waiting at the back stage, the winners of the competition were announced. We won the second prize in the cohort! We had won a reward for our hard work! Although not everyone got a share of the prize, actually we did, but most importantly, we all had learnt that with hard work, you will succeed. As the class motto go “42 Minds 1 Spirit”, while decorating the classroom, we had developed an even closer relationship with our classmates, learning to work as a team.

It was a great time, although I hate the singing. Maybe I am unable to highlight the spirit so much, I mean it's something you already experience for yourself, don't you agree? Of course, I've tried my best, so let's just all soak in the experience of the new year and get into the festive mood...yeah!

I took a blur picture of the hall while the rest were singing...LOL

Thanks to Marcus for helping me to take video at bakstage=D

A Not So Boring Day

Monday, January 19, 2009

Monday, a day commonly associated with boredom and as the typical Singaporeans would call it boring (though I also a typical Singaporean) sighs… However, School was suprisingly hectic today, though it only started at 9.30am.

The collection point for old stuffs. The collected stuffs are sold to raise money to give to the old folks.

It started off when I came to school carrying two heavy bags of old clothes (this may seem crazy) cause I am force to do it. No! It is because I am compassionate (Compassion, one of our school’s core values) to those old folks and wanted to do some thing meaningful by donating some old clothes of my. By the time I reached school my shirt was soaking wet:(

The day started off when I heard a loud commotion, upon reaching the classroom. It all started because the hooligans from 2F are not happy when they lost so badly to our class in DotA (Defence of the Ancient)So yeah! It started off with English Reading Programme…“sian” After the lesson we had soccer. Unfortunately, hooligans from 2F interfered with the game and spoilt it. They camped at our goalpost and kicked the ball away when it cam to them or do some silly actions. But that did not stop us from playing so we continued. During the game, my toe hit the ball in attempts to clear it from range – Kiran (striker) took the shot. Ignoring the pain, I continued. Fortunately, the bell sounded and recess was over. I quickly hobbled off the pitch and back to class. Final score 2-1. (I let in 2 goals. Sigh)

A few students and AFT, Mr Koh helping to cut ang pow for the cow, as you know this year is the "Niu" year. You will see later:)

After recess, we had science practical. I was not paying much attention as it is quite boring:( It was not long after science ended a subject I actually looked forward to! My Higher Chinese, Wang Jun, teacher has a unique ability to conduct his lessons in a fun and interesting way. By the way, his English is very lousy. He always calls the students (us) “Ladies and the woman” (We are males! Not females)Our last period was English, and Mr Tan showed us some of our classmate's blogs. Surprisingly, one of the blog shown was mine. After school, I stayed back to help out for the Chinese New Year (CNY) celebrations.

After the decorations:

Until next time, this is Chen Jie signing out. Byes!

A classic Rubik's Cube, solved A classic Rubik's Cube, scrambled

Hi to all my 2D classmates:) This will be my 2nd entry and it will be about speedcubing which used to be one of my much-loved favourite past time. Firstly, a brief introduction on it......

The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in 1974 by Ernő Rubik. It is said to be the world's best-selling toy, with over 300,000,000 (300million)Rubik's Cubes being sold worldwide by 2005!

In a classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces is covered by 9 stickers, among six solid colours (traditionally white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow). A pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be a solid colour. Apart from the regular 3x3x3 cubes, higher order cubes have patented and created such as the 2x2x2 ,through 5x5x5( As shown in the picture above). There are exactly 43,252,003,274,489,856,000 possibilities, which is approximately 43 quintillion to solve a Rubik's Cube, and that's a lot!!!

So yeah, enough of the intro. So when was my first encounter with Rubik's Cube ? One day, I can't remember the date, when I just came to school I saw my fellow classmate, Kiran playing with an intriguing looking cube. I observed how swiftly Kiran rotated to cube and got enthralled by it.

I embarked on the ‘ambitious’ journey to of solving the cube that had frustrated thousands of people worldwide. With the help of Kiran and other friends, I finally mastered the concept of the complicated puzzle. It was such an ecstatic feeling when I first got all the six sides correct.

Steadily, my timing improved drastically. When I first started, my timing was 5 minutes. However, after two months of regular practice, it had dropped down to an astonishing 30secs and it became part of my daily routine.

Unlike other hobbies, this particular hobby is very appealing. In my opinion, speedcubing stimulate the brain and develop logical and systematic approaches to problem-solving, keep the mind sharp beneficial to the maintenance of short-term memory, eye-hand co-ordination and general concentration. Most importantly, it is engaging and full of astounding fun.

Now on the negative side, I got to admit that too addicted to speedcubing is detrimental. I vividly recalled that I got so preoccupied that I could not even ‘break’ when term 2 started in March last year and neglected my studies. Therefore, my results dropped drastically. My results were awfully atrocious :(

To cope with this problem, I had to take severe action. I had to prioritize myself, studies must always come first and to infuse restraint in myself. This proposal proved to be a fruitful. I passed with flying colours for my end of year examination...Let’s celebrate...=)

So wrapping up my second post, Dmoral of the story: studies always come first. Though I won’t really discourage people to refrain from playing Rubik's Cube as it is an exceptional way to distress.

Just for fun ...>.<...LOL

A Special Day

Saturday, January 10, 2009

This is my first ever english blog post and it will be about EDUSAVE AWARDS CEREMONY.

Today is quite a memorable day. It was the day where I went to the Bedok Community Centre to receive my Edusave Scholarship. It's a cash award given out to encourage the top 10% of each school's cohort to encourage us to continue to strive for better results. As the Victorian Motto goes " Nil Sine Labore" Nothing really can be accomplished without hard work so I should work harder to achieve better results.

A blurry photo of the stage

When I arrived, I hardly saw anyone I knew, surprisingly. I think it's because most Victorians stay around the Simei area and not Bedok. However, I recognised a victorian as he was wearing the school tie and his name is Francis from class 2a. I am elated however, ignored him as I suspected the he don't know me. If I went up to him, I will be very embarrassed.

We were supposed to report at 7pm, while the ceremony would be at 7.45pm. Of course, you might be asking yourself, "What exactly did you do for almost an hour?". The more seasoned people were reading books, obviously used to the monotonous atmosphere. This being only my first time receiving the scholarship, I wasn't as "experienced" and I could only look around and act dumb:(

Before that though, there was something very interesting that happened. I mistook my seat no. as C 00 46.I immediately seat down when I found the seat. However it was very embarrassing when a guy turned up and said that I took his seat. I checked the letter and found out that my seat was actually C 00 47. Someone on duty brought me to my seat. Needless to say I was quite angry at being made a fool for nothing :(

A photo of the guest of honour, Professor S Jayakumar shaking hands with Francis

Eventually, it was my turn to go up and receive my award. One of the things which could be improved, I felt, was the fact that no one really knew what to do. Do you bow towards the audience or don't you? For me I just decided, oh well, since everyone was bowing I'll just follow suit.So yeah. It was a rather boring process as there were over 200 receipients. I am famished as I did not eat any thing before I came as I had Chinese Orchestra until 7.00pm and I had to rush here. When they finally announced that we could go and have some refreshments, I immediately put my certificate in my bag and when there. I think Francis when home after the ceremony as I did not see him after that.

DMoral of the story: Always pack a book when you know something's going to be long and boring. Since everyone's crazy about twilight now, maybe picking it up isn't a bad choice. :) It's not really a moral per se, but considering that it was just one long award ceremony I think it's not so bad to be able to pick something out from it.

One last photo:

I did not show the cheque in case anyone thinks I'm bragging(Just a precaution). That's all for now, see you guys tmrw!
